Ferris is a mature-aged dog with a big heart and a brilliant mind, but he requires an experienced home willing to continue his behaviour modification training plan. Originally released from the Seeing Eye Dogs program due to his high distraction levels around dogs, Ferris was later returned when his behaviour escalated to aggression towards dogs.
Ferris enjoys activities where he can utilise his busy mind. Nose work and tracking games are a great way of building a positive relationship with him and for his new owners to share an enriching experience with him.
Seeing Eye Dogs is committed to finding the best welfare outcome for Ferris, and as such, we are offering a specialised foster-to-adopt opportunity for this unique boy.
To set Ferris and his future family up for success, we are offering a structured adoption process:
Foster-to-adopt model – Ferris will be placed in your home under Seeing Eye Dogs’ ownership for three months. During this time, we will provide:
- Weekly support check-ins for the first month
- Fortnightly check-ins in the second month
- Monthly support in the third month, before ownership is officially transferred
- Ongoing Veterinary Behaviour Support – Ferris’ new owner will continue working with the veterinary behaviourist who has been consulting with Seeing Eye Dogs. His behaviour is managed with medication and structured training, which will require ongoing adjustments under professional guidance.
Ongoing support with the veterinary behaviourist will require a financial commitment from his new owner once ownership has been transferred.
The Ideal Home for Ferris
- A quiet rural property with no other pets or livestock
- A firm but fair handler experienced in managing large, strong dogs
- Someone committed to ongoing training and vigilance to support his behavioural needs
- Ferris thrives when he’s engaged in training, learning new things, and forming a strong bond with his handler. He is affectionate, intelligent, and eager to work – but he needs the right environment to succeed.
- It is important to note that Ferris will never be a dog that goes to a dog park , group dog training events or sits at a coffee shop with other dogs as he does not enjoy this activity
If you’re interested in behaviour modification and ready to provide a structured, supportive home for a complex but deeply rewarding companion, we would love to hear from you.
