About Ubu
Ubu is a gentle, affectionate dog with a big heart and an even bigger love for belly rubs. While he didn’t continue in the Seeing Eye Dogs program due to difficulty maintaining focus during training, he has many wonderful qualities that make him an excellent pet for the right home. Ubu is easy to manage on lead, enjoys straight-line walking, and has impeccable toileting habits. He walks well in a head halter and responds best to praise from his person rather than food or toys—he’s a true relationship-based learner.
Ubu would make a great companion and has some nice qualities that would lend well to an informal therapy role.
Ubu has a small cataract in his left eye which is not currently affecting his vision. A repeat ophthalmology check is recommended in 6 months to monitor for any changes. His adoption fee has been reduced to cover the costs of this repeat check.
Where I grew up
Ubu was raised in a single-story suburban home filled with activity, kids, and animal companions. He lived with two children under 12, a resident dog, a cat, and regular foster pups from the Seeing Eye Dogs program. He’s used to a lively, noisy household and handles busy environments well.
He also attended workplaces with his carer, including a factory, school, and grooming salon—calm and relaxed when tethered or in a playpen.
A good fit for me is...
Ubu would be best suited to a home with:
- Adults or families with older children
- Another friendly dog or a confident cat (he’s been great with both!)
- A secure yard where he can stretch his legs
- A gentle, patient owner who can offer consistency and companionship
- Someone who enjoys brisk walks—Ubu is a fast-paced walker and may not suit a slow-moving household
He would benefit from a family who understands that building trust and routine takes time. Once settled, Ubu thrives on companionship and will happily curl up beside you for cuddles.

- Sensitive – May take time to warm up, but once he does, he’s loyal and trusting
- Sound & Environment Aware – Can be sensitive to new sounds or environments, but builds confidence over time
- Independent – Not overly food or toy motivated, but responds beautifully to praise and a consistent handler
- Good Around Other Pets – Has lived peacefully with cats, dogs, and children
Ubu isn’t a fan of crates for sleep but settles well in open spaces and prefers to sleep on his bed nearby. He can be a little unsure in new situations but, with encouragement, will give things a go.
