About Oats
Oats is a sweet, affectionate boy with a calm and easygoing nature. He absolutely adores people, enjoys cuddles, and is incredibly gentle—both in how he interacts and how he takes treats. While he didn’t continue in the Seeing Eye Dogs program due to some distraction challenges around other dogs and a general lack of focus, he has many strengths that will make him a wonderful pet in the right home.
He’s intelligent and motivated to learn, responding quickly to training and obedience cues. Oats has had lots of exposure to busy environments and takes unusual sounds and situations in stride. If something startles him, a quick shake-off and he’s right back on track!
Where I grew up
Oats was raised in a quiet suburban home with two adults and an elderly cat. He’s been well-socialised to a variety of environments, including a workplace above a busy factory filled with forklifts, delivery trucks, and unpredictable noises—none of which phased him. He travelled to work with his carer and enjoyed hanging out under the desk on a tether or resting calmly in his crate.
A good fit for me is...
Oats would suit a home where people are around more often than not, as he thrives in human company and enjoys being part of the action. He’d do well with:
- Adults or families with older children
- A home with or without another friendly dog
- A suburban or semi-urban environment with a secure backyard
- Someone who enjoys light walks and has a gentle, consistent approach to training
He’s not high-energy and doesn’t need excessive exercise—after 7km, he’s ready to call it a day! He loves a daily outing but is equally happy relaxing at home.
My personality traits
- Affectionate – Loves people and seeks out cuddles and attention
- Gentle – Calm nature, soft with treats, and very tactile
- Smart and eager to learn – Quick to pick up new skills and enjoys training
- Easygoing – Unbothered by most environments and resilient when startled
- Quietly cheeky – Has been known to steal a plant tag or dig a little in the garden
- Low maintenance – Prefers a harness over a head collar, loves being brushed, and is happy to sleep in a crate at night
Oats doesn’t love water, but brushing is his spa treatment of choice. He may show some mild distraction on walks—especially around dogs or busy activity behind him—but with positive reinforcement and ongoing guidance, he continues to improve.
