Qualifying Questions (please ensure you can answer YES to the following)

Can you commit to being involved in the foster caring program for a minimum of 6-12 months? (mandatory)
Are you available to care for a puppy/dog for a minimum of a week, once a month, if required?
Are you willing to participate in ongoing dog handling training onsite when required?
Are you able to transport the dog to Kensington or any other location as required?
Are you physically fit/able to walk/handle large dogs?
Are you happy to have dogs sleep inside your house?
Can you as the Primary Foster Carer ensure that the puppy/dog will NOT be left alone or with someone else for more than 3 hours a day? (mandatory)

As a Foster Carer, your role is vitally important to the final outcome of our dogs.

Your dedication and adherence to our program will directly impact the progress and outcome of our dogs in training. Managing home behaviour, toilet training and providing specific feedback to Seeing Eye Dog staff is a large part of setting these dogs up for success.

It is important to remember that dogs requiring foster care have not completed all of their training and do require ongoing guidance.

What type of Caring are you interested in? (please select yes/no for each Caring option)

Short Term Foster Caring - Currently only available in Greater Bendigo and Maryborough, Ballarat, Geelong, Gold Coast, Brisbane, Buderim/Maroochydore and the suburbs surrounding these areas.
  • Day and night care in your home for a varying period – may be one week, or up to several months.
  • Short term care encompasses dogs from all areas of our training program; from puppies to dogs in training, to graduated dogs that would benefit from a rest in a home environment.
  • The puppies/dogs can be anywhere from 8 weeks to a few years old. Some of these dogs will go into foster care with a SED coat and can accompany you on walks and outings.
  • If a puppy, the pups are taught basic obedience, toileting routine and how to maintain excellent home and social behaviours, they are still learning and need guidance to get by distractions.
  • Older dogs need maintenance in basic obedience, toileting routine and how to maintain excellent home and social behaviours.

Breeder Caring (Victoria only)
  • Full-time special care for a creator of future Seeing Eye Dogs.
  • Dog will settle-in as part of the family but you would be expected to maintain its basic obedience, toileting routine and excellent home and social behaviours.
  • As our breeding dogs are not de-sexed, no off-lead exercise is allowed.
  • All SED breeding dogs are provided with a ‘blue coat’ so they can accompany you on outings.  
  • Dogs ‘in season’ will need to be brought to SED Headquarters.
Training Dog Caring - Currently only available in Buderim/Maroochydore
  • For dogs in formal training that benefit from time outside the kennel environment.
  • Our trainers will collect the dogs from your home in the morning (Monday to Friday) and drop them back in the afternoon. The dogs are likely to be between 12-18 months of age.
  • Your main role will be to provide a relaxing environment that encourages rest after a busy training day/week, therefore they cannot be walked unless requested by Seeing Eye Dogs.
